Treatment for Sleep Apnoea

CPAP treatment

There are many products and treatments for snoring but the most effective prescribed treatment for sleep apnoea is CPAP, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. This form of treatment acts to splint the airway open whilst you sleep. It is delivered via a small mask system over the nose or nose and mouth combined. It eliminates apnoea and snoring allowing better quality sleep for you and your partner.

At Sleepscreen, the staff use the devices and masks themselves and have introduced stringent support processes that provide first hand knowledge and understanding of the problems that a first time user may face. Whilst CPAP is initially a daunting prospect, most patients and their partners are pleasantly surprised at how quiet and easy it is to use. A period of adjustment is expected and the majority of people experience some improvement in their daytime alertness and general well being within the first couple of weeks.

Long term follow up of CPAP is strongly advised by the SleepScreen clinic. Routine appointments are generally scheduled to optimise equipment function, to troubleshoot mask and pump problems and to flag when specialist reviews may be warranted.

Getting started

Once it has been established that you have significant sleep apnoea, a trial of treatment may be prescribed.

Your doctor or specialist will refer you to us to commence a CPAP trial

A trial will consist of:

  1. An initial one hour consult involving explanation of your results, what to expect from treatment and education on the use of the machine and mask and systems that are available should you elect to use CPAP long term
  2. Several consults through the trial including downloading clinical data from the machines that gives the patient Corroboration that their sleep apnoea is well controlled and address any issues that may be occurring
  3. At the completion of your trial, a test will be performed to ensure that CPAP treatment is correcting breathing problems and oxygen levels.
